 Introduction - Tatler Media pack


1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

"Tatler is a fabulously targeted, sensationally accurate rifle shot to the very richest readers in the country. These people live the life reflected on our pages, both physical and virtual and boy, do they love to shop."

They use a metaphor to suggest that their product is popular and relevant.
They suggest that their magazine represents how rich people live which means that people wanting to know how rich people live will buy their magazine.
Suggests that they advertise in their magazine by saying that the people who read their magazine love to shop.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tatler?

Travel guide - the people who read it like to go on expensive holidays
Weddings - a lot of people who read it get married and try to have a fancy expensive wedding
Beauty and cosmetic surgery - readers tend to get plastic surgery and they care about their looks
Spa guide - readers enjoy expensive spa treatments and beauty treatments 
Watches and jewellery - readers own and buy a lot of accessories
Schools guide - a lot of readers have children and want to send them to private schools

Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

title is serif which suggests that it is traditional and gives it authority.
other text is in sans serif which is modern and bold.

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

They mention big names
they reference politics
It talks about the EU and England
It references royalty
references high quality and expensiveness

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

the blue red and white link to the union jack flag which is a reference to the cover line about the EU and Brexit.

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

The central image is of Emma Weymouth who is well known and part of the aristocracy.
It looks like it is set in an expensive looking garden
her dress stands out against the background and is rather unusual due to the colours and design.


Representations

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

Emma Weymouth - she is a member of the aristocracy
Boris Johnson - references politics
Royal family - loved by the target audience and shows the importance of the magazine

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

They know and care a lot about politics and the news due to mention of Boris Johnson and Brexit
They wear a lot of fancy clothes 

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 

Women are represented through the cover lines which mention fashion and dresses
People of colour are represented by the photo of Emma Weymouth
Rich people are represented through the idea of the aristocracy and mention of high brow topics e.g. politics
Men are represented through the mention of Boris Johnson and his brother

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

The stereotype of women being pretty and feminine is reinforced by the cover line "fashion fit for a queen".
The stereotype of women having no status or power is subverted by "the marchioness of bath".
The stereotype of women not caring about politics and world issues is subverted by the fact that the magazine talks about politics and their target audience is women.

Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

The working class are not being featured in Tatler as the magazine is aimed at rich and posh people so they want it to be high brow.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

holidays - a lot of people in Britain enjoy going to other countries and on fancy holidays
spa breaks - there are a lot of spas in Britain and British people go to spas a lot
cosmetic surgery - a lot of people in Britain have had plastic surgery and British people care a lot about their looks
Watches and jewellery - their are a lot of place to buy accessories and British people like to buy accessories
private schools - there are a lot of private schools and a lot of children in Britain

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler? 

The readers by the title because it suggests that they like to gossip and gossip has connotations of being rude so they might think that they are being thought of as rude.
Politicians because they might think that they are making a mockery/joke out of their job

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?


Rich and posh people who like to watch drama programs specifically Bridgerton.



People of colour are often put on the front covers.


Glamourous people and celebrities are often on the cover.

All of the front covers I have chosen include people who are considered glamorous
All of the front overs I have attached have a person of colour on the cover
I think all the people on the front covers are well known people.
