Audiences take in information passively and these messages have the same effect on everyone.
2) Write a definition of an active audience:
Audiences interact and male choices about media text.
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory:
Audiences are always passive and take the intended message.
4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: Media text - The Times newspaper
> Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY: tv show - heartstopper
> Why: people who are dealing with the same things will relate to the characters
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: tv show - I'm not a robot
> Why: It is fun to watch and no one can relate to it
RELATIONSHIPS: tv show - Greys anatomy
> Why: It is a long running series where you tend to be upset if a character you like dies
5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).
The clip from blue planet uses diversion as people are unable to relate to this as they are people, and there are no people in it to care about. However you could oppose to this statement by saying that people root for the animals and their safety and can deeply care for the animals. you could argue that this clips brings the audience voyeuristic pleasure because it is showing the animals true lives but, you could also argue that it brings the audience visceral pleasure. This is because it is a very magnificent thing to watch and might bring audiences a physical thrill.
To take this further, select a media text of your own choice, embed it in your blog and write another detailed paragraph analysing the audience pleasures in that product.

This clip has uses of relationship because they have watched a whole film and have finally gotten to see her succeed. It also has uses of personal identity because someone who is a lawyer or has been to court might relate this. However it could also have uses of diversion because most people would not relate as this is based a long time ago and most people have not been in that situation. It gives the audience visceral pleasure as it has a lot of exciting twists and leaves you in suspense. The audience could also experience vicarious pleasures as they might feel like they have succeeded when the character succeeds or may feel proud, happy or excited.
